Sales tonnages are stable and basis values are the same as last month’s figures, in France. We hear that basis figures may come under negative pressure, in the short term.
Consumption is declining, a little, in Italy. Distributors are struggling to pass price increases on to their customers. Inventory levels are rather high. Purchasing decisions are being delayed, pending the outcome of the elections, in March.
Producers’ basis values are stable, in Spain. Certain distributors did not increase their effective prices, in February. They are, therefore, competitive, compared with the mills’ selling figures for new production. Import offers are attractive – but rising.
Demand remains strong, in Sweden. Basis values are unchanged from those in January. Swedish companies are investing in the development of electric vehicle batteries and other alternative automotive energy sources.
Market sentiment is good, in the Netherlands. Consumption and basis figures are stable. Competition, between European stockists, is fierce. Material from Asia is available at comparatively low prices and, in some cases, delivered more quickly than from European mills.
Sales tonnages are healthy, in Denmark, and the outlook is optimistic. EU producers have strong order books but they cannot achieve basis value hikes. In fact, some buyers are asking for reductions. Significant volumes are offered, from Taiwan. Prices from that country remain competitive, even after the application of antidumping duties.
